Celebrate Watershed Awareness Week
October 13 – 19, 2008

To help create public awareness about the importance of our watersheds, the Sarasota Board of County Commissioners has declared October 13th through 19th “Watershed Awareness Week.” To celebrate, watershed-related educational events and programs for the whole family are scheduled throughout the week at SEC member sites. The public is invited to attend one or several of these fun, nature-based activities that teach awareness and good stewardship of watersheds.

Our DVD

"The Watershed And You: A Direct Connection" is created in a human interest, documentary style, that tells the story of our interdependency on the watershed and its role in sustaining the health and vibrant beauty of our community. Utilizing wonderful video footage including aerial views, live interviews, maps, photography, and music, this 20-minute multimedia piece is meant to raise public awareness about a complex issue that is important to sustaining our quality of life here in Sarasota County. You will also learn the important roles individuals, neighborhoods, and communities can play in preserving the watershed.

"The Watershed And You" has been produced by the SEC Southern Coastal Watershed Leadership Program with funding provided by the Manasota Basin Board of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice.

Watershed Educational Kiosks

Educational kiosks developed by SEC enhance our understanding of the County's watersheds and teach how the productivity and vitality of natural systems, stormwater, water supply, wastewater, and land-use are all part of an integrated system. Emphasis is placed on the intregal part everyone plays in the sustenance of a dynamic, living system, and the impacts of watersheds on each citizen's quality of life.
